You’re fifteen minutes into what was supposed to be a focused work session. Your laptop is open, your coffee is still warm, and you’ve almost — almost — got your head around that tricky problem at work. Then it comes: “Daaaaaad! She took my crayon!”

You take a breath. You handle the crayon dispute. You sit back down, re-read the last paragraph you wrote, and try to pick up the thread. Two minutes later: “Dad, I’m hungry.” And just like that, your deep work window evaporates.

Thanks for reading Dads Getting Stuff Done! It’s whether you can get anything meaningful done despite the interruptions.

It’s Not About Eliminating the Chaos — It’s About Working With It

Here’s the uncomfortable truth most productivity advice ignores: if you’ve got young kids at home, you’re never going to have a perfectly quiet, distraction-free work environment. And chasing that ideal will only leave you frustrated.

The good news? You don’t need three uninterrupted hours to do great work. Research on deep work — the kind of focused, cognitively demanding work that actually moves the needle — shows that even 60–90 minute blocks can be incredibly productive. For parents, even shorter bursts of 25–45 minutes can be enough, if you’re intentional about how you use them.

The shift isn’t about finding more time. It’s about designing your day around the reality of life with kids — and being strategic about the time you do have.

Map Your Focus Windows

Every household has a rhythm. Kids nap at roughly the same time. CBeebies runs for a predictable stretch. The school run creates a pocket of quiet. Your partner might be home on certain afternoons.

Your first job is to map these natural windows of opportunity.

Grab a piece of paper and sketch out a typical day. Mark:

When kids are asleep or at school/nursery

When another adult is home and can take the lead

When kids are most likely to play independently

When the house is genuinely at its quietest

These are your focus windows. They might be shorter than you’d like — 45 minutes here, an hour there — but they exist. The key is to protect them fiercely and use them for your most important work.

Don’t waste a focus window on emails or admin. Save those for the noisy times when you can’t think straight anyway.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_kLG!,w_2400,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fba9ccaa1-0b15-4d83-bd0c-3828c7abf37d_1536x1024.png" width="1000" height="666.8956043956044" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/ba9ccaa1-0b15-4d83-bd0c-3828c7abf37d_1536x1024.png","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":false,"imageSize":"large","height":971,"width":1456,"resizeWidth":1000,"bytes":1771754,"alt":"A visual daily timeline showing “focus windows” Signal

Young kids don’t understand “I need to concentrate.” But they can learn visual cues.

Some ideas that work:

Headphones on = Dad’s working. When the headphones come off, Dad’s available. Simple, visual, effective.

A physical sign on your desk or door. Some dads use a simple traffic light system: green means “come chat,” red means “give me a few minutes.”

A timer they can see. A visual timer (like a Time Timer) shows kids exactly how long they need to wait. “When the red is gone, Dad’s finished.”

The magic here is consistency. If you sometimes respond to interruptions during “red light” time and sometimes don’t, the signal becomes meaningless. Be kind about it, but be consistent.

And make the “off” signal just as clear. When you’re done with a focus block, be fully present. Put the laptop away, get on the floor, play a game. Kids who feel secure that Dad will be available soon are far more patient about waiting.

Batch Your Deep Work

Not all work requires the same level of concentration. The trick is to match your task type to your environment.

Deep work (requires focus)

Writing, coding, problem-solving, strategic planning

Schedule during your mapped focus windows

Aim for 25–45 minute blocks with short breaks

Shallow work (can handle interruptions)

Email, Slack messages, admin, scheduling

Do these when kids are around and interruptions are likely

Keep a running list so you don’t have to think about what to do next

Micro-tasks (2–5 minutes)

Quick replies, small approvals, updating a to-do list

Perfect for the gaps between “Dad, watch this!” Activities

Here’s a game-changer that many dads overlook: set your kids up for independent play before you start your focus block, not after they come asking for something.

Five minutes of prep can buy you 30–45 minutes of uninterrupted work:

Activity boxes. Prepare a few boxes with different activities (colouring, LEGO, stickers, puzzles). Rotate them so they feel fresh.

Audio stories or podcasts. A kids’ podcast or audiobook can captivate kids for a good stretch — and it’s not screen time. Toniebox is a great product for this that I’ve found to be particularly helpful.

Simple snacks. A bowl of chopped fruit or crackers on the table means they won’t come to you when they’re peckish.

Structured screen time. If you’re comfortable with it, a well-chosen show or educational app for 30 minutes isn’t the end of the world. It’s a tool, and there’s no shame in using it strategically.

The key is to start the activity together. Sit with them for a minute, get them engaged, and then step away. Kids are much more likely to continue something they’ve already started than to begin something new on their own.

Design Your Environment for Focus

Your physical environment matters more than you might think. A few small changes can make a big difference:

Noise-cancelling headphones. If you don’t own a pair, this is the single best investment you can make for working from home. Even without music, they reduce the ambient chaos enough to help you concentrate. I’ve been using Sony WH-1000 series for years and they are great for this – a bit pricy by it’s not hard to find pre-loved ones in great condition on eBay.

A dedicated workspace. It doesn’t need to be a separate room — a corner of the kitchen table with your back to the play area can work. The point is having a consistent spot that your brain associates with “work mode.”

Phone in another room. Not on the desk. Not face down. In another room. Social media and notifications are the other source of distraction that’s easy to blame on kids when, honestly, it’s often just as much our own doing.

A “shutdown” ritual. When your focus block is over, close the laptop, tidy your workspace, and mentally transition. This helps your brain let go of work so you can be present with your family.

If you’re looking for a simple way to keep track of your focus blocks and daily priorities, a planner app like Do Everything can help — you can set your three key tasks for the day and tick them off as you go, without overcomplicating things.

Lower the Bar (Seriously)

This might be the most important section in this entire post.

If you’re waiting for conditions to be perfect before you start your important work, you’ll never start. The bar for “good enough” focus is much lower than you think.

Some of the best creative and strategic thinking happens in imperfect conditions. Your brain learns to work in shorter, more intense bursts. You become ruthless about what actually matters. You stop faffing about with formatting and get straight to the real work.

Perfectionism is the enemy of dad productivity. Done is better than perfect. Thirty minutes of real work beats three hours of half-distracted pretending-to-work.

And here’s something nobody tells you: working parents are often more productive per hour than their child-free colleagues, precisely because they have less time. Constraints breed focus.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!wSM_!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7cbffeb5-c451-4630-b2e5-8533db8e2b4c_1402x1122.png" width="1402" height="1122" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7cbffeb5-c451-4630-b2e5-8533db8e2b4c_1402x1122.png","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":1122,"width":1402,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":2331076,"alt":"Real-life dad workspace at home with laptop and kids’ The toddler is having a meltdown marathon. Your partner’s stuck at work. The WiFi goes down (because of course it does).

On those days, give yourself permission to write off the deep work. Seriously. Handle the shallow tasks, be present with your kids, and try again tomorrow.

The worst thing you can do is push through in frustration, snapping at your kids because you “need to work.” They’ll remember Dad being angry far longer than your boss will remember a slightly late deliverable.

The system works over weeks and months, not individual days. Some days you’ll get two solid focus blocks. Other days you’ll get none. That’s fine. The average is what counts.

A few rescue strategies for tough days:

Swap with your partner. If you both work from home, take turns being the “on” parent in 90-minute shifts.

Move to a café. Sometimes the best thing to do is leave the house entirely for an hour or two. A coffee and a change of scenery can salvage an otherwise lost day.

Nap time is sacred. On chaotic days, treat nap time (if you’re lucky enough to still have it) as your absolute highest-priority focus window.

Start Small: Your Three Actions for This Week

You don’t need to overhaul your entire routine. Start with these three things:

Map one focus window. Look at tomorrow’s schedule and identify one 30–45 minute block where you could do deep work. Just one.

Prepare one activity box. Spend 10 minutes tonight putting together a box of activities for your kids. Nothing fancy — crayons, paper, stickers.

Try the headphones signal. Tomorrow, tell your kids: “When Dad’s headphones are on, I’m working. When they come off, I’m all yours.” See how it goes.

That’s it. Three small experiments. See what sticks, adjust, and build from there.

The goal isn’t to become a productivity machine who never gets interrupted. It’s to get enough meaningful work done that you feel good about your day — and have the mental energy left over to be the dad you want to be.

If you found this helpful, you might also enjoy The 30-Minute Weekly Planning Session Every Busy Dad Needs — it pairs perfectly with mapping your focus windows.

What’s your biggest challenge when trying to focus at home? You’re slumped on the sofa after a full weekend of soft play, food shopping, and fixing that thing in the bathroom that’s been broken for three weeks. Your partner asks, “So what’s the plan for this week?” and your mind goes completely blank. You know there’s a school event on Wednesday. You think you’ve got a dentist appointment. And work? That’s a mystery you’ll solve at 7:45 AM tomorrow when you open your laptop in a mild panic.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Most dads I know — myself included — have spent years lurching from one week to the next, reacting to whatever lands in front of them. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t take a massive overhaul to change that. It takes about 30 minutes, once a week, and it genuinely transforms how the rest of your week feels.

Thanks for reading Dads Getting Stuff Done! It’s about giving yourself a clear picture of what’s coming, so you can show up for the stuff that actually matters — and stop that low-level anxiety of constantly forgetting something.

Why Dads Specifically Need a Weekly Plan

Let me be honest: before I had kids, I could get away with winging it. A vague mental to-do list and a calendar reminder here and there was enough. But fatherhood changes the equation entirely.

You’re now juggling:

Your own work commitments — meetings, deadlines, projects.

Family logistics — school runs, clubs, playdates, appointments.

Household stuff — shopping, cooking, repairs, admin.

Your partner’s schedule — making sure you’re not both double-booked.

Your own wellbeing — exercise, hobbies, rest (remember those?).

That’s a lot of moving parts. And when none of it is written down in one place, things slip through the cracks. Not because you’re a bad dad or a disorganised person, but because no one can hold all of that in their head reliably.

A weekly planning session isn’t about control — it’s about clarity. When you know what’s coming, you make better decisions about where to spend your energy.

<a It’s simple, flexible, and you can do it with a notebook, a phone app, or whatever works for you. The tool doesn’t matter nearly as much as the habit.

Step 1: Pick Your Time (5 Minutes to Decide, Then Stick With It)

Choose a consistent slot each week. Popular options:

Sunday evening — after the kids are in bed, before the week starts.

Friday afternoon — close out the work week and look ahead.

Saturday morning — with a coffee, before the weekend chaos kicks off.

There’s no perfect answer. The best time is the one you’ll actually stick to. I personally use Sunday evenings because it gives me a sense of calm heading into Monday.

Step 2: Review the Previous Week (5 Minutes)

Before you plan forward, glance back. Ask yourself:

What went well? Maybe you nailed that work presentation, or you made it to the gym twice. Acknowledge the wins — dads are rubbish at this.

What didn’t happen? Not to beat yourself up, but to understand why. Was it genuinely too much? Did something unexpected come up? Or did you just forget?

Is there anything unfinished that needs to carry over?

This step takes five minutes tops, and it stops you from making the same planning mistakes week after week.

Step 3: Map Out the Non-Negotiables (10 Minutes)

Open your calendar — the family one and the work one — and write down everything that’s already locked in for the coming week:

Work meetings and deadlines.

School events, kids’ clubs, and appointments.

Your partner’s commitments that affect your schedule.

Any social plans.

Now you can see the shape of your week. You’ll spot the busy days, the breathing room, and the potential clashes before they become Monday-morning surprises.

Top tip: If you and your partner don’t already share a calendar, start. It’s a game-changer. Whether it’s Google Calendar, a whiteboard in the kitchen, or an app — just get everyone’s stuff visible in one place.

Step 4: Choose Your Priorities (5 Minutes)

This is the most important step, and where most planning systems overcomplicate things. You don’t need to schedule every hour. You need to answer one question:

What are the 3 things that would make this week a success?

Not 10 things. Not a massive list. Three. They might be:

Finish the quarterly report at work.

Take the kids to the park on Saturday.

Go for a run on Tuesday and Thursday.

Write them down. These are your anchors for the week. Everything else is secondary.

“The key is not to prioritise what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” — Stephen Covey

Step 5: Block Time for What Matters (5 Minutes)

Now take those three priorities and find specific slots in your week for them. Don’t leave them floating as “I’ll try to fit that in.” Give them a home:

The quarterly report — block out Tuesday morning, 9-11 AM, no meetings.

Park with the kids — Saturday, 10 AM. Put it in the calendar like you would a work meeting.

Running — Tuesday 6:30 AM, Thursday 6:30 AM. Kit ready the night before.

Treating personal and family priorities with the same seriousness as work meetings is the single biggest shift most dads can make. If it’s not in the calendar, it’s a wish, not a plan.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" A kid gets ill. A work crisis lands. The boiler breaks. Life with children is unpredictable by nature.

The point of the plan isn’t that it’s perfect — it’s that it gives you a starting point to adapt from. When things go wrong, you can look at your three priorities and ask:

Can I still do one or two of these?

Can I move something to later in the week?

Do I need to let something go entirely this week? (And that’s okay.)

A plan you adjust is infinitely better than no plan at all. Don’t aim for a perfect week. Aim for an intentional one.

Making It a Shared Habit

One thing that’s made a huge difference for me is doing a quick planning check-in with my partner. It doesn’t need to be formal — just five minutes over a cup of tea:

“Here’s what I’ve got on this week.”

“Here’s what you’ve got on.”

“Where do we need to cover for each other?”

This catches the clashes (”Wait, we’ve both got something on Thursday evening — who’s with the kids?”) and means you’re working as a team rather than two people independently trying to figure it out.

Some families do this as a proper “family meeting” with older kids involved too — letting them know what’s happening in the week, asking if they need anything. It’s a brilliant way to teach kids about planning and responsibility, and it cuts down on the “But you never told me!” complaints.

Tools That Help (Without Overcomplicating Things)

You genuinely don’t need much. Here are a few options, from simple to slightly more structured:

A notebook and pen — write your three priorities and your week’s shape on a single page. Old school, but it works.

A shared digital calendar — Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook. The key feature is sharing, so your partner sees your stuff and you see theirs.

A task management app — if you like having your to-do list alongside your calendar. Apps like Do Everything let you set weekly tasks, tag them by area of life, and carry unfinished tasks forward automatically — handy when you’re juggling family and work lists.

A whiteboard or planner on the fridge — great for families with kids old enough to read. Everyone can see the week at a glance.

The best system is the one you’ll actually use. Don’t spend three hours setting up a colour-coded Notion template if you know you’ll abandon it by Wednesday. Start simple. Add complexity only if you need it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" about getting more done. It changed how I felt about my weeks.

Less guilt. When you’ve deliberately chosen your priorities, you’re not constantly feeling like you should be doing something else. You made a decision. You’re following through.

More presence. When you know the work stuff is handled (or at least planned for), you can actually be there when you’re playing with your kids, instead of mentally running through your to-do list.

Better sleep. That Sunday-night dread? It fades when you already know what Monday looks like.

Fewer arguments. When both parents know the plan, there are fewer “I thought you were doing that” moments.

Research backs this up too. Studies consistently show that people who plan their weeks experience lower stress and higher feelings of control — and as dads, feeling like you’ve got a handle on things is half the battle.

Start Small This Week

If this all sounds like a lot, here’s your bare minimum. Do just this on Sunday evening:

Look at your calendar for the week ahead. Just look at it. Know what’s coming.

Write down three priorities for the week — one work, one family, one personal.

Tell your partner your plan. A two-minute conversation. That’s it.

That’s your version 1.0. It’ll take 10 minutes, and I promise you’ll feel more in control heading into Monday than you have in months. You can refine and expand from there over the coming weeks.

The goal isn’t to plan a perfect week. It’s to stop sleepwalking through one.

What does your weekly planning look like right now — do you have a system, or are you winging it? I’d love to hear what works (and what doesn’t) in the comments below.

If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

How to Juggle Work, Family, and Personal Time Without Dropping the Ball — for more on balancing all the competing demands.

The Dad’s Guide to Morning Routines — to pair your weekly plan with a solid daily start.

Thanks for reading Dads Getting Stuff Done! your time effectively is to challenge the very notion of "work-life balance." This concept, which implies equal weight given to different areas of life at all times, sets an unrealistic standard that leaves many feeling like failures.

Instead, consider embracing "work-life integration"—a more fluid approach that acknowledges different areas of your life will require different levels of attention at different times. Some weeks, work will demand more of you. Other times, family needs will take priority. And occasionally, your personal wellbeing must come first.

The key is intentionality. When you're conscious about where your time and energy are flowing, you can make deliberate choices rather than feeling like life is happening to you.

"Balance is not about spending equal time in each area of your life, but about being fully present wherever you choose to be." — Jon Butcher

Setting Priorities That Matter
<div Here are three powerful techniques:

Time-Blocking

Rather than working from a to-do list, schedule specific blocks of time for different activities. Research shows this approach can increase productivity by up to 150%.

Designate 90-120 minute blocks for deep work

Schedule "shallow work" (emails, calls) in shorter blocks

Include transition time between blocks

Don't forget to schedule blocks for family and personal time

Task Batching

Group similar tasks together to minimise the mental energy lost when switching contexts:

Designate specific times for email/messaging

Batch household chores

Group similar work tasks (calls, creative work, administrative tasks)

Strategic "No"

Perhaps the most powerful time management tool is the ability to decline requests that don't align with your priorities. Practice these phrases:

"That sounds interesting, but I can't commit to it right now."

"I'd love to help, but my plate is full this month."

"I need to focus on X right now, but I could consider this in the future."

The Family Component

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" planning, life happens. Deadlines get moved up, children get sick, and unexpected challenges arise. The difference between those who manage the juggling act successfully and those who don't often comes down to adaptability.

Develop these resilience practices:

Build buffer time into your schedule for unexpected events

Have contingency plans for common disruptions

Practice the "rule of three"—identify the three most critical tasks that must happen today, no matter what

Learn to pivot quickly when needed, without beating yourself up

Perhaps most importantly, practice self-compassion. The goal isn't perfection but rather conscious choices that align with your values over time.

Conclusion

Juggling work, family, and personal time isn't about achieving perfect balance every day. It's about making intentional choices that reflect your priorities over time, creating systems that support those priorities, and developing the flexibility to adapt when life inevitably throws you curveballs.

Start small:

Identify one non-negotiable in each area of your life

Create boundaries to protect those priorities

Experiment with time-blocking for one week

Practice saying "no" to one low-priority request

Remember that finding your rhythm is a journey, not a destination. The strategies that work for you may evolve as your career develops, your children grow, and your personal needs change. What remains constant is the need for intentionality—being the author of your time rather than its victim.

What's one small change you'll implement today to better juggle your work, family, and personal time? If you're struggling to recall, you're not alone. Early mornings offer what many dads crave most: silence. It's not just about the quiet, though. Research shows that early risers are more proactive and better at anticipating problems and minimising them effectively.

The magic of morning productivity lies in what scientists call "willpower batteries" - our capacity for focused work and decision-making is at its peak in the morning.
